E-waste Essay

E-waste, it is becoming a growing problem in the modern world. As electronic products are becoming more and more common and complicated, new ways of disposing of electronic products safely are needed to keep the environment safe. Unfortunately, these new methods are not popping up and big brand electronic manufacturers such as Microsoft, Sony and LG are resorting to third world countries to recycle their products for them. These methods are about ten times cheaper to use than disposing of them safely in developed countries.

Disposing of these products in third world countries have devastating effects on the environment and the people disposing of the products. Most hazardous materials in the electronics are directly touched by the workers which can cause neural damage, infections etc.  Also the products are most of the time burned which releases deadly fumes into the bodies of workers and into the environment where humans and animals live. Also the products that cannot be burned are just dumped somewhere where they are sometimes consumed by animals and become very toxic and dangerous to everyone in the community.

The only way to prevent this e-waste problem is for manufacturers to pull up their pants and take responsibility for the problem. Electronics are one of the fastest growing industries so of course manufacturers can afford to dispose of these products safely and effectively but would rather save money and time and see the products disappear forever.  Also, safer products must be made so that the workers who dispose and recycle of e-waste are not harmed when working with these products.  It will not only save the workers lives but also the ecosystems in which they live. This is also very preventable but big companies would rather use products which benefit their customers (AKA the people who make them money) better than others living on the other side of the world who dispose of their products.

Week 8 Blog Part 1

1. I use at least 10.

2. They usually sit somewhere in my house or someone takes them and drops them off at the dump or something.

3. I always buy new devices, can’t trust used ones.

4. E-waste is waste that is electronic, contains materials that might be hazardous to the environment and cannot be dropped off at a dump and must be recycled at an e-waste plant. This includes broke electronics.

5. We can stop e-waste by recycling it properly or giving it to someone else who needs it more than the original owner.

6. eWaste Recycling deals in all types of electronic and waste recycling. They handle all e-waste in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and the US. They collect batteries, soldered circuit boards, cathode ray tubes, and mercury wetted switches. e-Waste recycling uses a system called Asset recovery where they demanufacture the whole product, salvage the usable parts and destroy the unusable ones. They then give their customers recycling certificates that are used for environment audits.

7. Ontario Electronic Stewardship is an organization funded by e-waste recycling industries that collect over 44 e-waste products including monitors, printers, fax machines and TV’s. The OES watches over other e-waste recycling plants and monitors them frequently to make sure they are recycling properly.

8. Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation is a non profit public service organization that recycles dead batteries for free. This includes cellphone and other rechargeable batteries.

9. Microsoft Environment is a section under Microsoft Corporation which recycles all Microsoft products and a list of many others. They also find many ways to make Microsoft products more environmentally friendly. Approximately 27% of all Microsoft products find their way back to Microsoft Environment.

Greg’s Rating (Late Teens)
-More violence, language and nudity than Teen but less than Mature.

Greg’s Rating (Late Teens)

-More violence, language and nudity than Teen but less than Mature.

Week 6 Assignment Part 3 (Greg Lucier)

1. I think the rating system is fair. It shows parents and kids what they’re getting themslves into and lets you get a first impression of the game before you buy it.

2. I think the line between Teen games and Mature games is startin to blur. I would probably explain the suggestive themes and violence which goes into the games.

3. I would like to make a rating in between teen and mature for an older teen setting because younger people around the age of 10-13 are picking up teen games too early and maybe make the pre existing teen rating a little more suited for younger teens. Such as a young teen and older teen rating.

4. I don’t think parents spend enough time paying attention to what their kids are playing because there are many children who are getting into M rated games and the parent is not aware of what their doing. I think most parents don’t even know the rating system exists.

5. I think little children should not be allowed to play violent games because it ruins the game for older players and its a little too much for kids to be playing. I would make the child have some ID to show the person who is selling the game and deny them if they are under age.

Week 6 Assignment Part 2 (Greg Lucier)

1. Yes I think kids are sensitized to video games because they’re so used to being around violence from video games and tv shows that it does not affect them anymore.

2. I don’t think there is a connection between crime and video game violence as much as crime and tv violence. I think this because tv violence is a lot more realistic and easier to do because they’re usually in a more modern setting which gives people the idea to do these acts.

3. I disagree with the decision to ban violent video games from people under 18 because its sort of unfair to people who enjoy the video games and I think it does little to promote teen violence as much as other things.

4. The video game industry targets teenagers by putting lots of violence and action and sometimes women in their advertisements because that is what males are attracted to. It will get them to want to be a part of the game.

5. I agree with this statement because you can’t even pickup a game these days without there being violence in it and if they are, they’re usually aimed for little kids which I don’t really play.

6. Let people play them, they’re the not the most contributing factor to real life violence.

Week 6 Assignment Part 1 (Greg Lucier)

1. 6-10 Hours

2. - Ragnarok Online, Fallout 3, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

3. They are all popular games so I can talk about the game with others. They’re fun, well made and 2/3 of these games are multiplayer so I can play with others.

4. Ragnarok (MMORPG -Massively Mulitplayer Online Role Playing Game), Fallout 3 (FPS or TPS -First/Third Person Shooter), Star Wars KoToR (RPG- Role Playing Game)

5. I find Fallout the most violent of the three. It is filled with gore, language, nudity and violence.)

6. I find Ragnarok Online the least violent. Its an anime MMO which has little violence and no gore or language unless you converse with other players playing with you.

7. I tend to play video games with others. Most of the time with my brother or my friends unless they’re not home or I am playing a single player game.

8. Its very difficult for me to leave a video game, especially if it is a really good one. Most of the time I will play a game to the end unless its really bad.

9. Sometimes I get frustrated with games, very easily. I usually just restart at the place where I got frustrated and do it a different way. Or just move onto another one.

10. I usually feel satisfied when beating a game but sad at the same time because I hate playing games over so I usual stop playing them when I’m done.

Greg Lucier’s Summer

This summer was a very eventful one for me. I went to a concert, I spent lots of time with my girlfriend, friends and family. I missed a summer vacation because my parents brought extra people and I couldn’t fit in the car, so they ditched me. I spent a week with my dad eating fast food and a delissio pizzas.

Week 3 Assignment

Greg Lucier Week 3 Assignment Answers Sept 17, 2010

  1. This affects me because I think teachers will have a more negative attitude to cellphones in school because their students are using them but the teacher does not know what they are doing on them. It also affects me because I can finally start using my phone at school. The risk of my phone being stolen will also increase because of the demand for phones will increase.

  2. I don’t think its a very good idea because students will not use their phones for learning and will probably spend all class texting on them. Though this may reduce noise in the classroom because students will be talking less.

  3. If students cannot afford phones then they can just use a traditional paper and pencil method. If the school bought everyone a phone, then people who already have a phone will probably sell theirs.

  4. I think that there should be no government rates because the students should not being paying to learn in secondary and grade school.

  5. I don’t think any class would benefit from this because the cons of using phones greatly outweigh the pros, no mater what class you’re in. The bottom line is, students will not focus on their work.

  6. I think students should only have cellphones out when there is a work period because it would stop them from texting during learning periods and would reduce noise during work periods.

  7. I am probably using technology for every hour that I am up, whether it is listening to my ipod, texting, on the computer or watching TV. Probably about 12+ hours a day.

  8. I would probably be able to take notes faster because I can text faster then I can write but other than that, I do not think it is a very good idea. I would probably not even listening during class if I was texting all period.
